Justin wrote this song for his wife, Heather. The inspiration came from a conversation between the two in the beginning of their relationship. Whenever she was in the kitchen, she would disregard the recipe. "How come you don't follow a recipe?" was Justin's question. Heather's reply was, "Recipes are only suggestions." Justin, not as adept at culinary improvisation, was amazed. During the pandemic, Heather entered her new role as president of her union and Justin took over a lot of the cooking (with the help of recipes).
The song art is a photograph of a recipe box. This particular recipe box was a gift given from Heather to her dad when she was 5 years old. Something her dad often said was, "When you put two good things together, you can't get a bad result." This may be true for someone like Heather, but not Justin. For example, popcorn is good on its own. Likewise, leftover taco stuff is good on it's own. Put them together and you get "The Mexican Popcorn Disaster of '12."
There are two good things that do go together however…Heather and Justin!
lyrics
Cook it up hot, cook it up fine
Taste oh so good I'm runnin' home for dinner time
To my baby, whoah whoah whoah
Cookin' somethin' up for me, mmm yeah
Make it up as she goes, oh yeah
Don't need no recipe
Runnin' low on this, runnin' out of that
and just like magic pulls a rabbit outta hat
Yeah my baby, whoah whoah whoah
Cookin' somethin' up for me, mmm yeah
Make it up as she goes, oh yeah
Don't need no recipe
No recipe, no recipe, no recipe, no no no
No recipe, no recipe, no recipe, no no no
"How come you don't follow a recipe?"
was my question
and her reply was,
"Recipes are only suggestions"
When I get home, workin' real late
Middle of the night, well she fills up my plate
Yeah my baby, whoah whoah whoah
Cookin' somethin' up for me, mmm yeah
Make it up as she goes, oh yeah
Just a pinch and a skosh, oh yeah
What goes in no one knows, oh yeah
Don't need no recipe
